About this site

Nov 23rd, 2009 by Chris Duggan | No comments yet

WHAT’S GREEN IN BIRMINGHAM? Climate change (or climate chaos as some people call it) is a reality which will increasingly dominate the 21st century. As citizens, we can help create a city to be proud of, leading the way in reducing global warming to help save the planet for future generations.

Our aim is to become the first port of call for people looking for green products and services, green spaces, green initiatives and groups in Birmingham UK, primarily through our website. With your help, we can help everyone cut the carbon by pooling our knowledge on all the different initiatives in the city to cut CO2 and other greenhouse gases – and other forms of pollution.

GREENING BRUM: If you are doing anything to help create a sustainable economy in the city, to preserve biodiversity, or to increase awareness of ecological issues, we want to know about it.

Poem: “LAST”

Dec 16th, 2009 by Chris Duggan | 1 comment

LAST

Outside
the quicksilver sinks a little in the glass.
Inside the conference hall
the temperature rises.

After decades of hypocrisy
quick minds need to find a quick and lasting deal
to save us from the quicksands,
requicken our forests, restore our full humanity.

Last,
the kings & queens begin to trickle in
with their signet rings,
as hustlers continue to cobble texts.

Last chance? Last days? Last gasp?
Place mind in heart, put pen to paper, breathe a prayer.

Roger Godsiff MP writes to Darling re RBS funding dirty oil extraction

Dec 8th, 2009 by Chris Duggan | No comments yet

5 December 2009

Dear Roger Godsiff,

I have just learned that our national bank, the Royal Bank of Scotland, has lent or underwritten £8bn for exploiting the tar sands in Alberta, Canada. This is a crazy scheme for extracting oil by strip mining, destroying huge areas of forest. Extracting oil from this highly impure source requires a huge amount of energy, and causes pollution of an unprecedented intensity in the oil industry.
