Churches: pray for a meaningful climate deal on Sunday

Dec 10th, 2009 by Chris Duggan | No comments yet

We suggest every church in Birmingham prays for world leaders negotiating in Copenhagen. It’s the eleventh hour! Please tell us in the comments if your church is doing this. Ideas from other faith communities are welcome too.

You could echo the candlelit vigils on Saturday by lighting a candle during Sunday morning worship, if your church does that sort of thing. Here is a short prayer you could use (if you have other ideas please tell us in the comments):
Creator God,
we wait in hope this Advent
for the coming of your Son,
symbol of your love for us
and all creation.

Enthral us with the beauty
and wonder of the natural world
endangered by our greed.

Enlighten us and embolden us
so that we have the courage
to challenge climate injustice.

Inspire our leaders
to reach a fair and binding deal
on climate change in Copenhagen.

And as creation too waits,
empower us to keep alive
the kernel of hope
that all things will be made new.

Amen
