It takes a wise man to reap the wind & the sun
Cardinal Wiseman School now has solar AND wind power …
Cardinal Wiseman Catholic Technology College in Kingstanding, B44, has installed a wind turbine and solar panels, primarily to power its computers. Excess energy from the system is stored in batteries, while the excess from the turbine is sold back to the National Grid. In January, the school estimated that the turbine alone was providing 7% of the school’s electricity.
The systems were installed by SRE Technologies Ltd. Scottish Power’s Green Energy Trust provided the funding. The project, which is the brainchild of North Birmingham City Learning Centre, appears to be exceptionally well thought out: the suite of computers uses ‘E-Green ICT’ technology to greatly reduce electricity consumption.
There is a lot of detail about the project, and some great pictures, on the school’s website at www.cardinalwiseman.bham.sch.uk/schoollife/ webarticles/windturbine/projectnavitas.html
Cardinal Wiseman CTC is working towards Green Flag status – the ‘gold medal’ from the Eco-Schools Award scheme.
