‘From the Ground Up’ The West Midland’s action on climate change

On World Environment Day, Oxfam launched two remarkable films at the Custard Factory Theatre, Gibb Street, Birmingham.

‘From the ground up’ is a West Midlands made film telling the inspiring stories of people in our own community who are joining people around the world in the fight against climate change.

Rob Doble, a 21-year-old student at Birmingham University, campaigns on climate change by writing to decision makers, joining protests and encouraging others to act on climate change. Grace Zhou from Wolverhampton recycles her household waste and teacher Amy Purnell teaches children at Selly Oak Nursery School about climate change and shows them they can have a positive impact on their environments.

Grace Zhou explains: “Climate change isn’t just a problem for the future. It is happening now. Climate change will affect us all but right now it is hitting the poorest peoples most. I have to do my bit to make a difference.’

Steve Rainbow, award winning West Midlands based filmmaker who has had his shorts previously screened at the Cannes film festival, made the film to support Oxfam’s work on climate change.

Rainbow’s commitment to raising awareness for climate change is such that he waved his fee as the director and even pulled in a few favours on the way, like asking Daniel Jones to edit the film and Birmingham band AQUILA to provide the soundtrack.

‘Sisters On The Planet’ features four inspiring women from Brazil, Uganda, Bangladesh and the UK who are dealing with the effects of climate change and striving to make a difference in their communities.

All of the people featured in these films are committed to working for a better future and will inspire others to take action.

Maya Segas, Midlands Campaigner for Oxfam said ‘This film is an amazing opportunity to see what the people of the West Midlands are doing to tackle combat change. We hope these films will inspire people to take action in their own lives. We can all make a difference in the fight against climate change if we work together for a better future.’
