Appeal for secondhand Asian clothes for Gambia

May 11th, 2009 by Chris Duggan | 1 comment

Old clothes provide training, employment and drama in Africa

We are an ngo based in the gambia. we have set up a tailoring project using old clothes – which is proving to be very successful. we have been buying the clothes here – very expensive – can you tell us if any of the businesses that take your waste clothing would be willing to send them to us? we are willing to pay for them/transport as long as it is not too prohibitive. we especially want asian/ethnic clothes but virtually everything can be put to very good use. it is not only creating employment but good tailoring/design training as well and we are also adapting much for use in our childrens theatre companies. any help would be greatly appreciated. many thanks and best wishes

I work for charity in the UK… sending clothes around the world (esp. used clothes) is quite expensive (3-4k GBP for a 40′ ft container – and that’s before you think of import rules of countries…)! If you need funds & have found friends in the UK, I would suggest they do fundraising here & then send the money for you to spend locally – is better for local economy as well. My 2p.
