Lord Hunt Of Kings Heath: “To beat the recession and beat climate change we need the pragmatic ‘Can Do’ spirit of West Midlands’ business.”

Speaking to the West Midlands Business Council today, Energy and Climate Change Minister, Lord Hunt of Kings Heath expressed his admiration for the positive way West Midlands’ business had faced the challenges of the recession. He pledged that the Government would continue to do everything it could to insure a reliable, cost effective energy supply for business:

“We recognise the importance of secure, reliable and affordable energy supplies for business, particularly in these tough economic times. The recent fall in energy prices is good news for business and we are looking at making sure that businesses, large and small can feel the benefits of that and get secure energy contracts in place for the future.”

He also talked about the opportunities the growing low carbon sector is already providing in the West Midlands:

“The West Midlands is already taking on the challenge of climate change. It’s low carbon sector accounts for some £8.4 billion of the region’s economy, comprising 4,179 companies with around 74,000 employees. Despite the economic downturn the sector is expected to grow by around 4% in the next year and employment in green industries by up to 45% to 2015.”

“The UK’s Low Carbon Transition Plan puts in place a roadmap to build on this strong foundation to put us in a prime position to take advantage of these opportunities. I have no doubt that the West Midlands, as a hub for Advanced Green Manufacture, innovation and transport, will play a key role.”
Notes to editors

1. An example of the ground breaking work in the West Midlands is the £80 million Low-carbon Vehicles Programme. This innovative programme supports West Midlands automotive companies to conduct further research and development into low carbon vehicle technologies. Advantage West Midlands has contributed £30 Million and with additional support from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR),this will create a Low Carbon Vehicle Development and Proving Centre which will link high tech research with manufacturing. It will have a particular emphasis in developing new drive trains and lightweight structures and will link up with similar programmes elsewhere in the UK.

2. The UK Climate Projections published last month show that if we don’t take action by 2080 the temperature for the hottest day of the year in the West Midlands could increase by a scorching 100 C by 2080 and even by 2040 there could be 11 per cent less rainfall in the summer leading to subsidence, lower crop yields and water stress.

“Birmingham City Council must speed up efforts to make the city more sustainable if it is to stand a chance of meeting challenging climate change targets, according to a leading environmental business expert.

“CEO of Environmental Business Communications David Middleton likened the council’s efforts to those of a supertanker whose rudder had been turned, but was still taking time to change direction.”

David Middleton appears to be the leading light in MEBC:

“MEBC is the Midlands Environmental Business Company, the corporate proprietor of the Midlands Environmental Business Club Limited.

“The company was formed in 2001 to reflect the growing role of MEBC in developing business opportunities within the environmental business sector.

“The Club, formed in 1991, is a highly active network of more than 300 individuals and organisations from both the corporate and public sectors of the central region of the United Kingdom, providing an information and experience exchange network, and signposting service. MEBC is committed to promoting the values of sustainable development and the benefits to be gained when they are practically deployed.”

Coun Paul Tilsley claimed Whitehall officials must consult local politicians. He said local government needed certainty over how projects would be funded from central government.

Writing in today’s Birmingham Post Coun Tilsley said: “It would be very useful for the government to consult with us on the best way to support our climate change activities. What we need is certainly on appraisal systems for funding climate change projects and proof carbon reduction is seen as a real priority in supporting investment decisions.

“Climate change is a global issue and one that needs local government and citizens to act together.”

He said Birmingham’s aim to cut carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2026 will be achieved through city-wide initiatives lead by Local Strategic Partnership Be Birmingham.

“That is why Birmingham has prepared its climate change response at a city-wide level, through Local Strategic Partnership Be Birmingham, and used innovative educational events to help the public understand how they can contribute to carbon reduction and efficient energy use.

“We are the only UK council to take part in the Clinton Initiative on International Climate Change. Our vision and commitment on climate change is to reduce the city’s carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2026.
“One day, when inviting people to a meeting at our house and describing it as “the house with yellow, peeling paintwork” I was told that Jericho [0121 440 7919] would give us a quote for repairs and decorations. Jericho is a social enterprise, based in Balsall Heath, that offers a range of services, including training, work experience and employment for people who are disadvantaged in the labour market. They had already provided us with a solar panel and a new, efficient boiler (replacing one that was over 30 years old) and we were delighted with the care and skill they used in this further work.”

A press release from BSustained: working with schools on locally produced food…

A female answer to Jamie Oliver has just launched her own healthy eating business spreading the five-a-day message to school kids, the homeless and people on low incomes.

Birgit Kehrer of Birmingham is the owner of BSustained – an ethical community scheme using mostly locally produced food, including her own home grown organic produce.

Birgit takes her fresh fruit and vegetables to schools and community centres giving cookery emonstrations that teach people how to prepare and eat healthy food on a budget.

She explained: “My main passion is healthy living and especially the five-a-day message for people on a budget. I work with all sorts of groups from homeless people who have recently been re-settled, to single parents, people on low incomes right through to schoolchildren and their parents.

“I suppose I’m a female version of Jamie Oliver; trying to connect to people from all backgrounds . I choose not to drive so when I go to the workshops, I walk there and wheel all the food in my trolley – or my moving office as I like to call it.

“It is possible to eat good, healthy food on a low income and this is what I teach. I do cookery demonstrations for primary and secondary school level – which is also part of the national curriculum – and teach the importance of a healthy diet. I’m looking at doing after-school clubs as well, where the parents come in and learn how to cook healthily rather than relying on the quick-fix, convenience meals.”

Birgit has worked with some of the schools to set aside plots for the children to grow their own vegetables and has found allotments to grow the food for her other community groups – such as the homeless, single parents, the recently re-housed and people on low incomes.

“I grow all sorts of vegetables, but I’m particularly fond of growing pumpkins and seem to have quite a talent for it!”

“I‘ve been gardening since I was five and a vegetarian cook for about 20 years so I know what I do inside out.”

“Birgit is hoping to expand the business and take it to even more schools and disadvantaged community groups. She’s also in the process of turning it into a social enterprise to attract funding and cast her net even wider.” More importantly, Birgit is hoping as a social enterprise she can put something back into the community rather than taking all the profit out.
