WHAT’S GREEN IN BIRMINGHAM?

Climate change (or climate chaos as some people call it) is a reality which will increasingly dominate the 21st century. As citizens of Britain’s second city, we can help create a city to be proud of, leading the way in reducing global warming to help save the planet for future generations.

If you’re looking for green products and services, green spaces, green initiatives and groups in Birmingham UK, start here. With your help, we can help everyone cut the carbon by pooling our knowledge on all the different initiatives in the city to cut CO2 and other greenhouse gases – and other forms of pollution.

GREENING BRUM:

If you are doing anything to help create a sustainable economy in the city, to preserve biodiversity, or to increase awareness of ecological issues, we want to know about it.

Write to your MEP TODAY 17 June

A request from Friends of the Earth to write to your MEP now about a vote to take place in Europe on Wednesday 18 June. (Greeninbrum is not a campaigning organisation but we are happy to pass on messages.)

Here’s a quick but timely action to make a very effective difference to
a vote to be taken in the European Parliament on Wednesday. The debate
on the law will take place tomorrow.

The vote is on minimum standards and LIMIT CO2 EMISSIONS from power
stations across the European Union. If passed, the law could help STOP
KINGSNORTH and other proposed coal power stations.

An ‘Electricity Bill’ will be going through Parliament and an amendment
has been proposed to limit emissions in electricity generation to 350g
CO2/kwh. If enough MEPs support this, conventional coal power stations
could not be built anywhere in 27 countries. While California has legal
limits on efficiency, the EU does not. The amendment to this law is
significant and it’s worth taking a stand.

Dear …………. MEP,

I have read that the European Parliament is to debate and vote on
electricity law this week.

I would like to convey to you my full support for Amendment 159
prohibiting Member States from authorising the construction of new power
stations that emit more than 350g of carbon dioxide per kilowatt hour
produced.

I believe that the risks attached to not adopting such an amendment are
too great to be ignored. Climate change is the biggest threat facing the
world and we need radical action urgently if we are to avert climate
chaos. Low carbon electricity is the foundation of a low carbon economy.
Decarbonising electricity is the biggest single action the EU can take
to cut carbon emissions.

The EU risks being left behind. California has already adopted a minimum
carbon dioxide emissions performance standard for new power plants. This
works within market dynamics as it allows the market to choose which low
carbon technology to deploy and encourages innovation on carbon capture
and storage. As a result utilities are now enthusiastic advocates of low
carbon electricity and efficiency, and while US per capita energy use
has risen by 50% California’s has remained flat for thirty years,
obviating the construction of twenty-four new large power plants.

As a constituent, I urge you to vote in favour of Amendment 159.

Yours sincerely,

………
